Some people are fans of the Carolina Panthers. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the Carolina Panthers. This 2012 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group. Read the other Why Your Team Sucks 2012 previews here. 1. Congratulations to Ryan Kalil for jinxing the shit out of his own team. There are few more tiresome storylines in sports than "X athlete guarantees a victory," because every athlete thinks they're going to win every game, and that's the way athletes SHOULD think. It's not controversial to declare your certainty of success. It means you're just as blindly arrogant as the douche in the other locker room. HOWEVAH, there's a marked difference between expressing that kind of thing off the cuff and taking out a full page ad telling people seven months in advance that you're gonna win a championship. Real easy for you to say, Ryan Kalil. Cam Newton is the one doing all the fucking work. He's the quarterback, the running back, the blocking back, AND Peter King says he leads the league in entertainer/iconoship 101. Now everyone's gonna look to him to back up your stupid fucking ad. NO ONE EVEN READS NEWSPAPERS ANYMORE. Let's take a closer look at this ad: For eighteen years we've wanted, hoped, and tried… Oh, please. Cleveland and Detroit fans spit on your supposed "long wait." At least you got to go to a damn Super Bowl. A moment is upon us, were dreams become beliefs and yearning becomes conviction You stole that from a Rhonda Byrne book. You'll see July 1st, 1993, when 40,000 of you bought club seats, licenses, and luxury boxes, financing the construction of our stadium in a single day. Oh, and could you possibly do that again? Because Jerry Richardson is already tired of this stadium and wants his own Jerryworld because he's an asshole. Now, look closer. ZOMG I SEE MENA SUVARI NUDE IN A ROSE PETAL BATH. At the daunting, unpaved path ahead, lined with detours, naysayers, and walls which seem insurmountable. But not for you. You'll ignore what you hear and break through ANYTHING that stands in your way. No I won't. The fuck are you putting this on MY shoulders for? Christ, does Ryan Kalil plan on doing ANY of this himself? He's farming out labor to Cam Newton AND to newspaper readers. SOUNDS LIKE A FREELOADER TO ME. Anyway, thanks to Kalil, the Panthers are doomed now. Especially since… 2. Fuck your dark horse status. I've been around long enough to know that consensus preseason dark horse teams ALWAYS end up eating shit. Take it from the idiot who thought he'd be all clever and pick the Bucs to win the NFC last season (and the Jets to beat them in the Super Bowl). All it takes is one bad bout of tendinitis in Cam Newton's knee for this to suddenly become a 2-14 team. There's nothing behind him except for Horse Balls Anderson and Jimmy Clausen's speedo. Given how high you're gonna take Newton in your fantasy draft next week, it's practically a given that some enterprising young defensive end will decide to go rolling sideways into one of his hinge joints. And then where will you be, Ryan Kalil? FUCKED, that's where you'll be. 3. Ron Rivera: possibly stupid. Remember, it was Rivera who called timeout with two seconds left at the end of the first half against the Saints last October, giving the Saints (who had no timeouts left) a chance to kick a field goal that would end up providing the decisive margin. I assume that's what Kalil was referring to when he said "detours." OOPS MEXICAN MIKE TICE JUST TOOK THE WIND IN OVERTIME. Drew Magary writes for Deadspin and Gawker. He's also a correspondent for GQ. Follow him on Twitter @drewmagary and email him at [email protected]. 4. Welcome to the three-headed RBBC of death. There's Jonathan Stewart. There's DeAngelo Williams. And now there's Mike Tolbert. And ALL of them will have their touchdowns vultured by Newton down at the goal line. I'm gonna end up drafting Stewart in Round 6 and then spend the next three months praying that DeAngelo, Newton, and Tolbert all suffer horrific injuries. That's what makes fantasy football fun! 4a. Never forget: Steve Smith punches babies. 5. Hear it from Panthers fans! Greg: Everyone has high hopes for the Panthers this year, which is exactly why I expect them to again disappoint the shit out of everyone. Can Cam repeat last year? No chance. Not at all. We also spent the entire off-season padding positions that we don't need. The Charlotte Observer just announced that Kuechly will be slated as the fourth LB this year behind Thomas Davis, whose knee is made of balsa wood. By doing this, they are letting Beason play his natural position of MLB for now. When (not if) Thomas Davis's thrice shredded ACL disintegrates, they will be shifting the LB corps around to positions they have never played. Mike Tolbert is playing for us? At fullback? And we still have J stew and Williams? We don't need another T/DT/CB/S? Great. Also, Jerry Richardson is racist. The rebranding of our logo was the biggest waste of time and money I have seen since this team's inception. We ended up with essentially the EXACT same logo, with the same glaring teal color that screams "This was drawn up in the 90's." It voided every single piece of Panthers clothing I had by replacing the existing logo with a drunk/squinting/winking-with-other-eye-brow-raised cat wearing a Phantom of the Opera mask. Thanks assholes. Dan: Cortland Finnegan and Mario Williams were there to be had for a team that was a good defense away from playing in the postseason but fuck it we need a 3RD FUCKING RUNNING BACK. For reasons unknown to anyone besides Jerry Richardson Mike Tolbert is now a Panther. If I didn't know any better Jerry Richardson is forcing Cam Newton into leaving for New England just because he wants to write him a hate letter in comic sans. Erik: Never before in history has a team gone into a draft or the offseason with their needs clearly defined and just completely and unabashedly ignored them. Now we must sit and pray for an entire season while no-name running backs curb stomp our defensive line. Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball, a gathering of goofball wide receivers will participate in the annual ritual of trying to save Steve Smith from getting gangbanged prison style by defensive back triple teams. As a frame of reference, Legedu Naanee was the lucky winner last year, and this year will most certainly involve overdrafted Armanti Edwards running routes drawn by a 3 year old with an Etch a Sketch. All of this follows an offseason filled with reports of Panthers' staff being excited for undrafted free agents, as if finding the next Victor Cruz involves throwing a dart at a US map and scouting the nearest community college. Thankfully we picked up fat boy running back Mike Tolbert, because we certainly didn't have enough skill at the position. Finally, throw in the guaranteed slew of season ending injuries that will happen either during or before the first game, like Jon Beason, David Gettis, or perhaps Ron Edwards who tore his triceps while tying his shoes at the first practice last year, and this is why the Panthers suck. Wanna be part of the Deadspin NFL previews? It's simple. Just email me and give me ample evidence of why your team sucks. I'll throw any good material into the post and give you proper credit. Frank Lampard knows new head coach Mikel Arteta will soon have to turn Arsenal s fortunes around, even if his status as a popular former captain gives him an early advantage at Emirates Stadium.
Arteta will lead Arsenal out at home for the first time against rivals Chelsea on Sunday, having started his tenure with a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth in midweek.
The Spaniard, who played for the Gunners between 2011 and 2016, left his role as Pep Guardiola s assistant at Manchester City to replace the sacked Unai Emery earlier this month.
Lampard, in the visiting dugout this weekend, enjoyed a warm welcome at Chelsea due to his status as a club great, yet he is learning results must swiftly follow.
I certainly found that it helps with knowing some faces behind the…
Antonio Conte hailed Romelu Lukaku after another superb individual display in the Europa League quarter-finals, but insisted the forward s success is also down to his Inter team-mates.
Lukaku scored what proved to be the winner as Inter set up a Europa League semi-final against either Shakhtar Donetsk or Basel thanks to Monday s 2-1 triumph over Bayer Leverkusen.
Nicolo Barella – having latched onto the rebound from a blocked Lukaku shot – opened the scoring, with Inter s star Belgian doubling their lead prior to Kai Havertz pulling one goal back for Leverkusen.
Lukaku could have scored a hat-trick, had referee Carlos del Cerro Grande not overturned two penalties after consulting with VAR.
But while lauding Lukaku, who became the first player to s…

Turning their attention back to Premier League duties on Wednesday night, Tottenham will welcome Brentford to north London.
Tottenham
Starting with the hosts, suffering last-gasp FA Cup heartbreak against Manchester City over the weekend, Tottenham will be seeking an immediate response here. Nevertheless, although Spurs might have eventually fallen to a 1-0 loss in north London, Ange Postecoglou’s side have continued to impress this season. Signing off 2023 with a 3-1 romp against Bournemouth, the former Celtic boss has his sights firmly set on securing a top-four finish. Opening the midweek fixtures sat just three points adrift of breaking into the Champions League spots, Tottenham will be excited by their largely successful flurry …
Luis Suarez scored twice in the second half to help champions Atletico Madrid come from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Real Sociedad at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak will feel he could have done better for both Sociedad goals as Alexander Sorloth finished off a slick, one-touch move to give La Real an early lead before Alexander Isak extended their advantage with a free-kick into the bottom-right corner shortly after the break.
Suarez gave Diego Simeone s men a lifeline with a header, however, and hauled his team back on level terms by winning and then converting a penalty.
The draw means Sociedad return to the top of LaLiga having been briefly usurped by Real Madrid, who trail by a point but have the benefit of a game in hand. Atletic…
Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann get on very well despite claims to the contrary, according to former Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic.
Griezmann has struggled for consistent form since his €120million move from Atletico Madrid last year and some have suggested his incompatibility with Messi is part of the problem.
Messi came off the bench to score twice and set up another, as well as play a key part in a goal for Griezmann, as Barca beat Real Betis 5-2 in LaLiga last week.
Griezmann, who earlier missed a penalty, scored only his second goal in seven league matches after Messi dummied Jordi Alba s cross into his path.
The pair only exchanged four passes throughout, however, as Messi mostly combined with Sergi Roberto (15 passes) and Sergio Busque…

The Argentine made his long-awaited return from injury in their 3-1 win over Philadelphia Union, having a hand in all three goals as they opened up a 10-point lead over FC Cincinnati in the table.
It was their fifth consecutive win following their heavy 6-1 loss to Cincinnati, and Messi acknowledged how well the team had performed amid some injury troubles this season.
As we said at the beginning, we know the squad we have, and the title is our goal, he told Apple TV. We re realistic and take responsibility for it.
Unfortunately, we ve had a lot of bad luck with injuries this year and were never at full strength for …
Julian Nagelsmann confirmed that Manuel Neuer returned to full training on Friday, but a home clash with Bayer Leverkusen will come too soon for Bayern Munich s goalkeeper.
Neuer required knee surgery in February and has not featured since a 3-2 win over RB Leipzig, in which he matched Oliver Kahn s all-time record of 310 Bundesliga victories by a player. He achieved the first 77 triumphs with former club Schalke.
The Germany international – who holds the record for the most clean sheets in the Bundesliga (209), having surpassed Kahn (196) in 2021 – returned to light training late last month, but Nagelsmann confirmed the 35-year-old is now back into full team sessions.
While Neuer will be unavailable for the meeting with Leverkusen at Allianz Arena, the Ba…

Kylian Mbappe scored twice and Moise Kean was also on target as Paris Saint-Germain returned to winning ways in Ligue 1 with a 4-0 victory at bottom side Dijon.
PSG suffered their sixth league loss of the campaign at home to Monaco last weekend but were good value for their win in Saturday s clash at Stade Gaston-Gerard.
Mbappe tucked away a penalty awarded for handball against Bersant Celina after Kean had opened the scoring for the reigning champions with his 15th goal of the campaign.
Prolific forward Mbappe doubled his tally in the second half and Danilo Pereira headed in a late fourth to help PSG move to within a point of leaders Lille, who play their game in hand at home to Strasbourg on Sunday.

Barcelona have confirmed that Ousmane Dembele has agreed a new two-year contract to stay at Camp Nou.
The five-year contract that Dembele signed when he joined Barca from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 expired at the end of June.
Talks have continued over a new deal and the France international has now agreed terms on a fresh contract, keeping him at Barca until the end of the 2023-24 season.
That Dembele remains a Barca player at all is a complete turnaround from the situation in January, when the club insisted the winger would be sold or leave on a free transfer at the end of the campaign after the 25-year-old turned down a contract offer.
Yet Barca on Thursday confirmed Dembele will remain with the Catalan giants.
The LaLiga club revealed he wil…
