Turning their attention back to Premier League duties on Wednesday night, Tottenham will welcome Brentford to north London.
Tottenham
Starting with the hosts, suffering last-gasp FA Cup heartbreak against Manchester City over the weekend, Tottenham will be seeking an immediate response here. Nevertheless, although Spurs might have eventually fallen to a 1-0 loss in north London, Ange Postecoglou’s side have continued to impress this season. Signing off 2023 with a 3-1 romp against Bournemouth, the former Celtic boss has his sights firmly set on securing a top-four finish. Opening the midweek fixtures sat just three points adrift of breaking into the Champions League spots, Tottenham will be excited by their largely successful flurry on home soil. Including a stellar 4-1 victory against Newcastle on December 10th, Spurs have won all of their previous three Premier League showdowns in front of their own supporters by an aggregate score of 8-2. Although Postecoglou’s men might be seeking some recent defensive stability, they should be smelling a real opportunity here.
Team News
Still away with South Korea at this month’s Asia Cup, Tottenham will once again be without skipper Heung-Min Son on Wednesday night. Likewise, all still dealing with respective injury issues, Postecoglou will be unable to call upon the likes of Manor Soloman, Ben Davies and Giovani Lo Celso.
In what could be a huge boost, England international James Maddison will make a first Premier League appearance since the start of November. Notching seven top-flight strikes this season, Richarlison will spearhead Tottenham’s charge in the capital.
Brentford
As for the visitors, managing to claim a crucial boost last time out as they snatched a 3-2 victory against Nottingham Forst, Brentford will be desperate to use that performance as a platform to build on. However, still battling it out at the foot of the Premier League table and with some in Thomas Frank’s camp still looking over their shoulders at a potential relegation scrap, the Bees have struggled to find any stability this season. Signing off 2023 with a 3-1 drumming at the hands of Crystal Palace, the west London outfit have recorded just a single win from any of their previous eight appearances across all competitions. Facing what will be a stern challenge here, Wednesday’s guests have also gained a reputation for their glaring issues on the road. Along with crashing out of the FA Cup following a 3-2 loss away at Wolves on January 16th, Brentford have lost all of their last five away fixtures.
Team News
Both away at this month’s Africa Cup of Nations representing Congo and Nigeria respectively, the duo of Yoane Wissa and Frank Onyeka will not feature on Wednesday night. Likewise, Kevin Schade, Rico Henry, Christian Norgaard and Aaron Hickey still remain on the sidelines.
Marking his return from an eight-month ban with a goal against Nottingham Forest on January 20th, England international Ivan Toney will spearhead Frank’s attack here. Now finding the net in all of his last three appearances on the bounce, Neal Maupay will partner Toney in the final third.
